A History: English round hand and ‘The Universal Penman’ The English round hand is a style of handwriting that developed in the 18th century, primarily in Great Britain. It grew out of earlier writing styles, especially the cursive styles of the late 17th century, which were written with pens that had a flexible nib (rather than the flatly Author: John D. Berry.   The Universal Penman is a beautiful book, and a must-see for anyone interested in the ornate writing styles that have long-since fallen out of fashion. The first few pages give a brief (but interesting) history about George Bickham and his engraved plates, and each page after that models a different writing style, usually in the form of a poem /5(55).   Unfortunately, Bickham published his work in 52 separate parts, over a period of eight years.
